WEBS are 17 country-specific series of securities listed and traded on the American Stock Exchange
4. Each WEBS Index Series invests in an optimized portfolio of ordinary foreign shares and seeks to track the performance of a specific Morgan Stanley Capital International Index. The share price of each WEBS series fluctuates with changes in the market value of its underlying portfolio of securities and in the exchange rates between the U.S. Dollar and the relevant foreign currency, and with the WEBS series’ income and expenses. Investing in WEBS provides immediate access to international markets, with daily liquidity in U.S. dollars. They are purchased through simple stock trades. ADRs
American depository receipts (ADRs) are certificates of ownership issued by a U.S. bank, which holds the shares is safekeeping as a convenience to an investor. ADRs can be issued at the discretion of the bank based on the demand for the stock. The shareholder absorbs the additional handling costs of an ADR through higher transfer expenses, which are deducted from dividend payments. As of September 1996, Morningstar International Stocks covered 725 ADRs representing stocks from 37 countries.
5American Shares
American shares are securities issued in the United States by a transfer agent acting on behalf of a foreign firm. Because of the added effort and expense incurred by the foreign firm, American shares in a limited number of firms are available.
